Safety Laboratory Regulations

 

Safety rules in general

  1. Students are allowed in the laboratory only in the presence of a tutor.
  2. Before entering the laboratory, you need to wear a laboratory coat and proper shoes.
  3. In the laboratory, you need to work carefully, avoid unnecessary conversations and keep your workplace clean.
  4. Preparations and reagents must not be examined by taste.
  5. Do not bring food to the laboratory. Eating, drinking and smoking cigarettes are not allowed in the laboratory.
  6. Take particular caution when handling concentrated acids, bases, poisons and flammable liquids.
  7. Keep the benches and shelves clean and well-organized.
  8. Avoid contaminating the chemicals; use only clean glassware and spatulas; label glassware in use.
  9. Read carefully the instruction and plan your experiments before starting to carry them out. If you have any doubts ask a tutor for help.
  10. Pay attention to others in the laboratory.
  11. Be sure you know where to find all safety equipment in the biochemistry lab. This includes such items as the fire extinguisher, first aid kit.
  1. Before leaving the lab, the workplace, reagents, and equipment should be put in order. Wash the lab glass. Turn off the taps.

Special safety rules

  1. Handling of strong acids and bases requires special attention. When diluting concentrated acids, the acid should be poured into the water and never the opposite.
  2. Volatile liquids and solids that are toxic or irritating should be handled under fume hoods.
  3. While handling flammable liquids such as ether, alcohols, benzene, naked flame (burners, matches) must not be in use.

Rules to follow in the case of accidents and injuries

  1. Chemical splatters into the eye. First, the eyelid should be opened by using the thumb and the pointing finger. Then, by using the eye wash kit, the eye should be rinsed with large amounts of water. The victim should receive professional medical help as soon as possible.
  2. Burning. The burned spot on the skin should be treated with water; then should be protected with a bandage. Provide medical help if necessary.
  3. Poisoning. Professional medical help should be obtained.

All injuries and accidents must be immediately reported to the tutor.
